Why Is My AC Running Constantly?

Air conditioning systems are designed to cycle on and off. When your system is constantly running, it indicates a problem somewhere. If your air conditioner does not stop running, you face higher energy bills and inefficient cooling. Finding a solution is important. Here are some things that could be causing this problem, and ways you can combat it.

1. Faulty Thermostat

Many problems with HVAC systems are not with the system, but rather with the thermostat. Check to ensure the thermostat is set properly. If it is, but the system keeps running, consider whether or not you need a new one. This is often the problem when the air conditioner is running continuously and seems to be cooling the home properly, but not when the air conditioner is running but inefficiently cooling.

If the air conditioner is running but cooling inefficiently, this likely isn’t the problem, so check the next few items on the list.

2. A Dirty Evaporator Coil

If the evaporator coil on your air conditioner becomes covered in dirt or debris, the system cannot efficiently cool the air in your home. This can easily happen, which is why we recommend annual maintenance.

The Arronco Comfort Air team will clean the evaporator coil at every maintenance visit. If the coil is in an area where dirt and debris have easy access, it can quickly become dirty again, so don’t assume this isn’t the problem just because you had recent maintenance.

3. Frozen Evaporator Coil

A constantly running air conditioner that is blowing warm air may be due to a frozen evaporator coil. To fix this, turn off the air conditioner and call the pros at Arronco. You need professional help to ensure that you properly fix the problem and do not further damage the system. Often this occurs because coolant has leaked out of the system.

4. Air Filter Problems

If your air filter is clogged or is too restrictive for your system, then your air conditioner is going to have to work significantly harder to cool your home. The air must always move through the filter, and when it cannot do so, the system will simply keep pushing until it does.

Changing the air filter is relatively simple if it’s become too dirty, but if you are wondering about the restrictiveness, give us a call. We can help you choose an air filter that will both filter the air and keep your system running efficiently.

5. Problems with the Blower Motor & Fan

The blower motor needs to produce air for your system, and the fan pushes that air through the system and into your home. If the blower motor is not producing enough air, your system may run too much. Similarly, if the fan is blowing at too low of a speed, the system may need to run continually just to cool your home. Reaching out to a professional will help you determine which of these problems is the culprit.

Your air conditioner should not run continually. If it does, then you need to take a closer look. There is likely a problem brewing. Contact the team at Arronco to get professional help diagnosing and repairing your air conditioner problem.
