The EPA Ban on R-410A: Why R-454B is the Future of HVAC Refrigerants

With the passing of the American Innovation and Manufacturing Act of 2020 (AIM Act), hydrofluorocarbon (HFC or HCFC) reduction over time is required.

Greenhouse gases, such as HFCs, contribute to climate change. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is phasing out R-410A refrigerants to comply with the AIM Act. Some of this phasedown will go into effect in 2024 and 2025.

This ban affects many residential HVAC systems. At the same time, R-454B is positioned as an eco-friendly refrigerant replacement option.

In this blog, our Arronco experts aim to help homeowners understand what this ban means, when they might need to switch, and how to handle the transition. For even more information, check out the EPA’s FAQs on the HFCs Phasedown.

What Is the R-410A Ban?

Early AC systems used the refrigerant freon, or R-22. It was prohibited in 2010 and eventually replaced by R-410A for widespread HVAC use. R-410A systems require high pressures to operate. As a result, there is a greater risk of harmful leaks during servicing. Due to R-410A’s global warming potential (GWP), such leaks can negatively impact our ozone layer, causing further climate change.

The EPA began phasing down HFCs in 2022 under the AIM Act, with 90% of existing CO2 emissions allowed to continue. The production allowance drops to 15% by 2036.

Existing HVAC systems can still use R-410A, so homeowners with current systems aren’t required to replace them immediately. However, the ban immediately affects new HVAC systems.

When Should I Install an R-454B System?

The newer refrigerant R-454B has a lower GWP, making it a more environmentally responsible choice. Replacing your AC system with an R-454B system now might be costlier in the short term, but it avoids many long-term ban-related costs and headaches when the old system needs repair or replacement.

How Should Homeowners Deal With This Ban?

Here are some practical tips how for navigating this refrigerant transition:

  • Stay informed: Keep up-to-date on EPA guidelines and changes in HVAC technology.
  • Consult with HVAC professionals: Discuss your options with a knowledgeable, reputable HVAC provider like Arronco. We understand the phasedown and can offer useful advice on R-454B systems.
  • Plan for future upgrades: Though immediate action isn’t required for existing R-410A systems, we recommend considering R-454B for future HVAC upgrades.

It’s worth noting that switching to R-454B has several potential benefits. These include greater energy efficiency, less environmental impact, and long-term cost savings for homeowners.

The R-410A phasedown and the switch to R-454B will have a positive role in reducing environmental impact. Homeowners need to plan for the transition and consult a knowledgeable HVAC provider to ensure they’re as prepared as possible for future HVAC upgrades.
