At the core of the system is a geothermal unit that serves as the home’s furnace and air conditioner. The geothermal unit relies on refrigerant and water located in an underground loop to heat or cool the air using the earth’s natural temperature

During warm weather, a geothermal heat pump collects heat in your home and moves it to the cooler 55° earth.  Water in the pipes transfers heat to the refrigerant, which is cooled by the earth. The geothermal unit compresses or expands the refrigerant to increase or decrease the temperature.

During cool weather, a geothermal heat pump concentrates heat from the earth’s natural underground reservoir of heat, concentrates it, and moves it to your home in the form of warm air.

What Is the Average Lifespan of a Geothermal System?
