Geothermal Tax Credit Extended Through 2021!

The Geothermal Tax Credit has been EXTENDED. It will be retroactive to January 1, 2017, so homeowners who bought a system in recent years are eligible for the 30% credit. Credits have been extended to December 31, 2021. They’ll remain at 30% until December 31, 2019, at which point they’ll begin a phase-out. For 2020, the credit will move to 26% and in 2021 the final incentive will be 22%.

How Does a Geothermal System Work?

Energy-conscious homeowners explore options to help them reduce their reliance on fossil fuels. By doing so, they are often able to save on utility costs at the same time. Geothermal heating systems use the earth’s temperature and the circulation of water to spread warm or cool air rather than relying on air outside the home. By using the earth’s natural heat, the amount of energy that is required is drastically reduced. Additionally, because geothermal systems tap into the temperatures that occur several feet below the surface, there is less fluctuation with these temperatures than with surface temperatures that change by the season. Geothermal systems pump water through loops in the ground to transfer heat to or from the earth.

Geothermal Heat Pumps vs. Traditional Heat Pumps

Geothermal systems heat and cool in a similar manner as using a traditional heating pump. Heat pumps are able to heat the home during the winter and cool it during the summer. They also utilize an antifreeze solution that circulates through underground piping in order to spread the thermal energy. This energy is ultimately connected to an indoor air handler and air ducts that are installed throughout the home in order to provide heating and cooling to your home.

Though a geothermal unit functions similarly to a traditional heat pump, geothermal systems are far more efficient. This is because geothermal heating and cooling systems use the stable temperature of the earth rather than the constantly fluctuating temperature of outside air.

Benefits of Installing a Geothermal Heating System in Cincinnati

The EPA and the U.S. Department of Energy recognize geothermal systems as the most environmentally friendly, energy efficient, and cost-effective way to heat and cool a home.

Some benefits of installing a geothermal system for your Cincinnati home include:

  • Geothermal heat pumps do not emit carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, or other greenhouse gasses that contribute to air pollution.
  • The EPA estimates geothermal heat pumps can reduce energy consumption up to 44% compared with traditional heat pumps and up to 72% compared to standard electric heating and cooling equipment. Saving energy means saving money on heating or cooling your home!
  • Because geothermal systems do not burn significant amounts of fuel (gas, oil, propane, coal), they operate at a lower cost and are much cleaner.
  • The Cincinnati area is rich in limestone—which is an efficient heat storage and transfer material—so it’s even more efficient to use geothermal heating and cooling here than in many other places!

Types of Geothermal Loops

Arronco installs both closed and open loop geothermal systems in Cincinnati. Closed-loop geothermal systems circulate a water-based solution through a “loop system “ of small-diameter, high-density polyethylene underground pipes. Closed-loop systems can be installed horizontally, vertically, or in a pond. Open-loop geothermal systems use an existing water well or surface water. Whether the system is open or closed, heat is transferred to or from the structure, regardless of outdoor temperature, to provide year-round comfort to your Cincinnati home.

Vertical Closed Loops

VertLoopThe ideal choice for a geothermal heat pump when the available land surface is limited is a vertical closed-loop system. Equipment for drilling wells is used to bore approximately 5.5” diameter holes from 150 to 300 feet deep. Two to six holes, approximately 10-12’ apart, are drilled for the average residential geothermal loop system.

With this geothermal system, we are able to put an average residential loop in a 12×12 area, making geothermal an option in even very small yards. The abundant limestone in the majority of Cincinnati gives us a huge advantage for installing vertical loops—limestone makes for easy, affordable drilling and has great heat transfer properties. With this advantage, we are able to install geothermal vertical loops at much less cost than in many other areas of the country. The vertical closed loop is utilized in about 85% of our geothermal system installations.

Horizontal Loops

HorzLoopHorizontal loops are often used when adequate land surface is available. Depending on geothermal system needs and space available, pipes are placed in trenches that range in length from 100 to 400 feet.

Pond (Lake) Loops

PondLoopPond or lake loops are economical to install when a large body of water is available for use by the geothermal heating system. Coils of pipe are simply placed on the bottom of the pond or lake to capture the geothermal energy. Ponds as small as 1/4 acre can be utilized for pond loops as long as we have 8’ or more of water depth part of the pond.

Open Loops (Well-Water Systems)

OpenLoopIn ideal conditions, an open-loop application can be the most economical type of geothermal system for Cincinnati homeowners. These use groundwater from a well as a direct energy source. We will need a water source capable of producing a minimum of 10 gallons per minute of clean water in order to utilize this type of system.
